How do you you remove the dates from your permalink structure without ruining all the hard earned links you have developed?
Glad you asked… It really is very simple… (Note I tried the various plugins first but had issues… In the end this solution is faster for the visitor, quicker to implement, and simpler.)
Assuming your current permalink structure is /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/
- First change your permalink structure to /%postname%/
- Create a .htaccess file (or modify an existing file)
- Add this line above any other WordPress declarations: RedirectMatch 301 /dddd/dd/dd/(.*) /$1
- Make sure the .htaccess file is in the root of your blog
Here is an example .htaccess file direct from one of my blogs…
RedirectMatch 301 /dddd/dd/dd/(.*) /$1
# BEGIN WordPress
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
# END WordPress
By 301 redirecting you are telling the search engines that the content has moved to a new location. While there is typically some drop off during the transition, your blog will come back stronger for making the change.
As an example of the effectiveness…
Here is an old url: http://www.golfballdriver.com/2008/03/18/michelle-wie-and-robin-lopez-at-charity-auction-pic/
which now redirects to the new url: http://www.golfballdriver.com/michelle-wie-and-robin-lopez-at-charity-auction-pic/

January 28th, 2012 — Blog Tips, Blogging, Content Ideas, Domain/Host, Readership, Social Networking/Bookmarking, Statistics, Subject/Topic
Is this your first time starting a blog? Here is a ten step checklist for starting your own blog.
1 – Choose a subject –
Determine what it is that you want to blog about. You need to have a concept before you can start writing about, so that you can appeal to the right niche. Your blog will die if you do not take the time to come up with a good subject that you can blog about.
2 – Title –
Come up with a title that is catchy, entertaining and easy for people to remember. Make your blog title catchy and interesting if you want it to attract readers.
3 – Buy a Domain Name –
Now you need to buy a domain name that is both easy to remember and related to your title. Domain names really matter in this day and age because they let potential readers know what your site is all about. Once you have a title and a subject, you need to create a domain name that will help readers find your site.
4 – Choose a blogging platform –
Try considering both your needs and your budget when you consider blogging platforms. Some blogging platforms like blogger are free or inexpensive, while others cost a little more but offer greater benefits. Another excellent blogging platform is WordPress, which is free and easy to use.
5 – Find a Web Host –
Unless you are hosting your blog on someone else’s server, the next step is to find an adequate website host. You need to find a web host that is reliable and offers the benefits and level of service that you need in order to get the most out of your blog.
6 – Find a flexible theme –
Not only do you need to find a flexible design theme, but you need to find one that you can easily edit to make your own. The design of your blog is part of your brand and concept. With a little CSS and HTML know how you can take a nice theme and really make it your own.
7 – Sign Up for Web Analytics –
With web analytics, you can figure out if you are doing the right thing, and if you are attracting the right people to your blog. Web analytics give you the stats that you need to determine what’s hot on your blog, what’s not hot, what most people are coming for, and which posts are more useful than others.
8 – Make your first post –
Let readers know what your blog is going to be all about.
9 – Start putting together real content –
The real challenge is creating real content on a long term basis. Research your facts, be sure about your information, and share your opinions, giving real content to your readers.
10 – Socialize, build relationships and readership –
Now that you have content, start socializing, meeting people, building readership and really getting your name out there. This is the fun part! Have fun, make friends, share information and build readers in the process and you will be good to go!
11 – Join the Blog Traffic Exchange
Once you have 30 or so posts the Blog Traffic Exchange will help grow your blog. How?

November 13th, 2011 — Blog Tips, Blogging, Hosting, WordPress
WordPress has created an incredible opportunity for those who are looking to take control of their future. It has provided the entire world with a system and service that simplifies web ownership. Users can create blogs and content quickly and easily, opening up broad possibilities for the greater population. Anyone who wants to be able to get their word out into the world can do so in a simple and easy way.
With that being said, the system is somewhat limited. Those who are looking to take their website further are going to want to have their WordPress site hosted. WordPress hosting is going to provide WordPress owners with the space and power that they need to completely expand their growing website or blog.
There are plenty of different WordPress hosting companies available on the market. This makes it difficult for many to differentiate between the different WordPress hosts in terms of the things that they need from a host. A couple of simple comparisons can help anyone to find the right WordPress host for their needs.
Compare Space
The first thing that WordPress individuals are going to want to look at is the space available through each WordPress hosting package. Those who are coming over from general free WordPress hosting are going to find that they do not have the space and size that they need to run a successful website. Take a look at the size and space available through each WordPress hosting company. Take a look at the jumps between the tiers of hosting size. You will be able to better understand how each company can meet your needs, as far as both present and future is concerned.
Compare Interface
Each system is going to have a completely different interface to work with. You want to know that you are going to be able to navigate through the system with ease, working on your WordPress site as quickly and efficiently as possible. Take the time to compare the user interface of each system. Find the hosts that have easy to use Interfaces, such as Host Gator. These companies provide simple interfaces that help individuals to easily manage their WordPress site or sites.
Compare Price
Price can be a difficult issue for those looking to start up their website or expand their website. Those who are successful do not always start with large amounts of money. This lack of funds highlights the importance of price comparison during a search for the best Website hosting. Price comparison is going to be able to provide you with the best price available. Simply look at prices for comparable services to understand the service that can provide your WordPress site with the price that you need. Be sure to only compare hosts that meet your space and interface needs; one should never choose a low-quality WordPress host because of price. Simply find the hosts that you are interested in, and compare prices to get the lowest price possible for the level of service you expect and need. My choice when starting a new WordPress site is a Host Gator Hatchling Account ($4.95 a month if you pay for 3 years or $8.95 for a month to month plan.) Use the coupon BlogTrafficExchange to receive $9.94 off of whichever package you choose.
Website hosting websites need to be compared on these multiple levels to provide website owners with the perfect WordPress host. Taking the time to compare different hosts will make the choice clear.
Blog Traffic Exchange proudly uses Host Gator for all new websites.

October 28th, 2011 — Blogging, Platform
One of the most popular hobbies and past times on the internet today has to do with setting up and maintaining your own blog. Blogging is all about creating an online journal or diary that people can read and comment on, so there is a huge community aspect to it. Blogging is all about writing down your thoughts, opinions and ideas, telling stories, posting pictures, creating videos and so much more. One of the biggest questions that comes up when it comes to blogging is which platform for blogging is better for a casual blog writer, WordPress or the Google Blogger platform?
Some people really only set up blogs to create some basic entertainment. These are people who simply enjoy writing. They sit down and begin to type, and they don’t worry about money or visitor counts or anything else like that. Blogging is a great way to meet people, communicate with people all over the world, get your thoughts out, and let out your frustrations or elations at what is happening in your life.
There are also people, however, that are concerned with earning an income, gaining traffic numbers and other serious matters, and for these people, understanding which platform is the best to use is much more important, especially when the two choices at hand are Google Blogger and WordPress. One platform, after all, may be capable of garnering more traffic than the other, and more traffic translates into increased profits for these serious Google Bloggers.
So what is the difference between WordPress and Google Blogger, and why and to whom does it matter?
Google Blogger - Google Blogger is a free, simple and quick platform to work with, but Google Blogger does not give much control, so serious Google Bloggers cannot have all of their needs met with this type of blogging platform. Also, because Google Blogger.com has control of your blog, it can be shut down or taken from you for pretty much any reason at all, meaning that you are leaving your work in someone else’s hands, and that’s not really the best option for anyone that is serious about their content.
WordPress - WordPress is ideal if you are looking for a situation that is more permanent in terms of blogging. WordPress does have a free service, but if you want a permanent or long term blog, you should host your WordPress blog on your very own server – This is something that Google Blogger has not made possible! Hosting for your own site can be found for $10 or less on many websites, and with some simple installation, you can have your own WordPress blog, completely under your own control without anyone being able to tell you what you can or cannot say online.
If you want easy, choose Google Blogger. If you want slightly more complicated but with a lot more control as a result, then WordPress is the only way for you to go.

October 25th, 2011 — Blog Tips, SEO
The structure behind WordPress is generous enough to allow for built in SEO advantages which come with building pages that static web page building and other blogging software cannot afford you. By using WordPress, you already have an advantage over bloggers, but only as long as you are willing to take advantage of the right permalink structure. By default, your dashboard in WordPress gives you three different choices that you can select from. The default permalink structure and one of the other options are both pretty terrible options. Basically, the three permalink structures that are available to you would create blog post URLs that look something like this:
- http://www.yourwordpressblog.com/2008/01/01/the-name-of-your-post
- http://www.yourwordpressblog.com/the-name-of-your-post-123
Which of these linking strategies do you think is going to be the most ideal for SEO purposes?
The truth is, while the bottom two seem to both be advantageous, including the date in your blog posts is not the best strategy to follow, making the third option the best option for you to follow.
For starters, putting the date stamp in your URL like the second example dilutes the value of your keyword, increasing the number of characters in your URL. While there is no real rule here, and while some SEO experts do seem to appreciate having the date stamps, it does seem to be much more advantageous to leave the post date out of the URL of your permalink structure. When you are trying to rank for keywords that you use in the titles of your blogs, and when you want to be found for the titles of your blogs, you need to show Google and other search engines how important your pages are based on their URLs. If you have a date stamp in your URL, Google will perceive the date stamp to be more important than your keyword, which can have a negative effect on your SEO effort.
It is surprising how important your URL names can be when it comes to your SEO effort and the efficiency of your blog. Not only are there numerous factors that make it worthwhile for you to leave the date stamp out of your URL, but there is also no good reason not to.
There is an added bonus to leaving the date stamp out of your permalink structure, in that it allows you to revitalize old posts, bringing them back to the forefront of your blog without having to mess with the date stamps. If someone links to your blog at http://www.yourwordpressblog.com/2008/01/01/the-name-of-your-post and you decide to change the date of your blog entry to bring it back to the front of your blog, all of those links will be destroyed, and your SEO effort will be largely undone in one fell swoop.
Sound good to you? Learn how to remove dates from permalink.

When it comes to blog improvement, one of the considerations that you might want to make relates to the design of your blog, as changing up the design of your blog can also have an impact of the quality of your blog and the functionality of your blog as well. Here are some tips for blog improvement in the area of your blog design and blog appearance.
Blog Improvement Tip #1 – Change the theme of your blog.
Do you remember the last time when you changed the theme of your blog? If you are using WordPress for your blog, then you probably know that there are thousands of different themes that are available for you to use for free. You can give your blog a fresh and new look simply by improving upon the theme of your blog.
Blog Improvement Tip #2 – Consider purchasing a premium theme for your blog.
If you really are interested in upgrading the theme of your blog and you are willing to spend a little bit of money in the process, consider buying a premium blog theme. With a premium theme, what you get is a highly functional and well designed theme and typically support from the theme designer as well.
Blog Improvement Tip #3 – Pay someone to help you with a custom design.
Stepping things up just a bit from the previous tip, you may also want to consider paying a blog theme designer to develop a unique, customized theme just for your website or blog, or if you are proficient enough you can design your own blog. If you are really serious about having a well designed blog, then this is the route that you should take.
Blog Improvement Tip #4 – Get a custom logo designed for your blog.
Another way that you can greatly enhance the appearance of your blog is to add a logo or improve upon your logo. Having a logo adds to the branding for your blog, giving readers and visitors an image that they can associate with your blog.
Blog Improvement Tip #5 – Use images in your posts.
One of the ways that you can easily improve the appearance and the visual impact of the blog posts that you make is to include images in your blog posts. You can find images on Flickr that are shared under creative commons, or you can spend a few dollars buying high quality images from places like Stock Xpert and iStock Photo to add images that are relevant to the subject of your blog posts to all of the posts that you make.
Blog Improvement Tip #6 – Change the color scheme of your blog.
Another way that you can offer a fresh new look for your blog is simply to change the color scheme up. This is something that can be relatively simple, and that often only requires making changes in the CSS file for your blog style. If you need help choosing a color scheme, there are a lot of resources on the internet to help you find complementing colors.

If you want to install WordPress on your own server, the first step is to download the necessary files from the website at WordPress.org download. Next, you will use an FTP program to upload the files to your host site. If you use Cpanel, you can use Fantastico in order to set up your database and files for the site. All you have to do is look for the Fantastico icon under Cpanel in the Blogs or Content Management System area of your hosting space. WordPress should be listed, along with a variety of other popular blogging formats. This creates for an extremely simple, one click installation and makes it quick and efficient to set up. Setting up WordPress this way literally takes only about a minute.
If you choose to install WordPress manually, it really does not take much longer, only about five minutes in comparison to one. Keeping track of your databases and database names is especially important if you will be working with multiple websites, so keep in mind that you may need something to keep track of all of the site names and their information. One simple way to accomplish this is to buy a rolodex and create a card for each of your sites. Add the relevant information to each web site on the card, including user names, passwords and other required information. This way, if you ever lose track of site information you can simply refer to the card and you will be just fine.
If you are installing WordPress manually, then you should be able to figure out what information needs to be written down as you go. The process will not be as obvious if the installation is done automatically.
Here are some basic tips for installing WordPress and having the installation go smoothly and comfortably:
- Use the public_html directory so that people will reach your blog when they type your domain name in the URL address locator rather than having to navigate around in search of your blog.
- Fill the title and tag line in. If you’re optimizing for SEO this is especially important but it should not be as difficult as some people make it. If you know what keywords to optimize for, it should not be that tricky for you to figure out.
- Delete any and all extraneous information, like sample posts, unnecessary tags, comments and posts and any other information that you do not need to be in your blog.
- Add an interesting theme rather than sticking with the one you get started with. There are thousands of unique WordPress themes out there, so choose one that suits the concept behind your blog and offers ease of readability and functionality. You may also be able to further customize the WordPress blog theme to suit your needs.

October 8th, 2011 — Blog Tips, Blogging, Platform
Blogs are, hands down, one of the easiest possible ways for you to publish your thoughts or messages on the internet. Blogs are excellent for spiking search engine enthusiasm, meaning that by writing in a blog you can easily attract plenty of traffic. But are you aware of what you should and should not do when it comes to setting your blog up in order to attract the maximum amount of traffic for all of the effort that you are putting in your blogging effort? Here are some simple tips for how you can significantly increase traffic to your blog, creating a popular blog out of your modest writing effort.
Step 1 – First and foremost, you need to make sure that you are using the right blogging platform.
Do not fall into the trap of using a free blogging platform for your website. These may be an excellent solution for keeping your costs down, but you end up relying on someone else’s computer, and if their server goes down, you could potentially lose everything. So while it may seem wise to start off on LiveJournal or Blogger, just don’t do it! If you want to create a secure blog, you should spend some extra money to make sure that you are in control of your own blogging endeavor.
Step 2 – The second consideration is to absolutely never, ever duplicate your content.
If you are using the default settings on a blog platform like WordPress, then your blog posts are going to appear in a number of different locations on your website, including your main page, your post page, your category page and your archive page. Unfortunately, most search engines are going to view this as duplicate content, and you may end up being penalized if you do not clean it up. Make sure that your settings are not sabotaging your blogging effort.
Step 3 – Finally, and perhaps most importantly, post as often as you possibly can.
Search engines are intelligent enough that they can tell roughly how often you are posting in your blog. Search engines are always on the look out for content that is fresh and new. The more often you are capable of posting to your blog, the better off you will be. Daily is always best, but every other day or twice a week are also acceptable solutions. Make sure that you are posting useful and relevant content when you post, rather than simply posting for the sake of search engine spiders, because your readers and subscribers matter most of all.
These tips may seem simple, but they are extremely important when it comes to preparing your blog for good, long term traffic. The more popular your blog becomes, the more viral it will be in attracting new, unique visitors every day, week and month.
