Do You Need a Blog Sitemap?

sitemapIf you have a blog, you may be wondering if you need to have a blog sitemap. What is a blog sitemap and what does having a blog sitemap mean for your website? A blog sitemap is a collection of links outlining the structure of your entire website. These links make it possible for your visitors to navigate quickly and easily to any section of your website as long as it is listed properly in your sitemap. The purpose of a blog sitemap is to make finding posts and pages easier by listing all of them in one place. There are a number of advantages that are associated with having a sitemap. So much so, in fact, that not having a blog sitemap is actually harmful to the productivity and functionality of your website.

So, what are the advantages associated with having a blog sitemap?

In addition to making it significantly easier for the visitors to your blog to navigate through your site, your blog sitemap is also going to make it significantly easier for search engine spiders to move through your site as well. This is going to improve the search engine optimization for your site by ensuring that every one of the pages on your site is capable of being found. This is going to increase your visibility in the search engines which in turn is going to increase the amount of traffic that your website generates.

Since most online search engines only follow a specific number of links going from a page, having your own blog sitemap is going to make sure that both visitors and search engines can access every piece of content on your website, not just some of it or most of it.

So, do you need a blog sitemap?

Whether or not you need a blog sitemap is largely going to depend on the type of website that you are running. If you do not have a lot of content yet, then a sitemap may not be necessary. On the other hand, if you are writing a blog and posting every day, as your page grows to include more content, having your own blog sitemap is going to be vitally important to the success of your site. Having a blog sitemap is going to make sure that people can find and read your content. It is going to make sure that the search engines spider and crawl your website. And when these things happen – That is when blog success happens.

So how do you get a sitemap?

If you have WordPress or Blogger, you should already be able to put up a sitemap based on plugins and code that is already set up. Otherwise, find a XML sitemap generating tool and get to work. You shouldn’t need to create your own sitemap from scratch – There are dynamic tools that can make it happen for you.

Blogging Business is on the Rise

20000You don’t have to be an analyst to realize that blogging business sites are on the rise and that it has become the latest career choice for a number of people. In just a few years, the amount of blogs that are currently on the Internet has increased dramatically. While this may seem like it is getting harder and harder to get the attention that your blog needs to be successful, it is actually very good news for those who are looking to blogging for their next career. There would not be such a dramatic rise in these sites if it was not effective and profitable.

It also means that if you are going to start a blogging business site, you have to do the work necessary to gain your share of traffic to your site. If you want your blog to earn money, you must do some crucial research before you begin. Prepare yourself for the naysayers in your life who will try to tell you that you cannot be successful with your blogging career. Just remain focused on your research and the work that is necessary to bring your blog to the top.

If you have not already picked out your niche for your blogging business, you should do some research to find a good subject. Focus your blog on the topic that you choose and resist the temptation to vary your topics or post unrelated information. Your loyal followers will be visiting your blog to read the latest on your particular niche.

In the beginning, it is a good idea to focus your topics to a few defined groups of topics. Stay on track with your blog and give your visitors value and fresh content every time they visit your site. This is what will develop a loyal fan base.

Blog every day for the best results from your blogging business. If you are able to blog a few times a day, do that as well. When you have a frequently updated blog, the search engines will respond. This will help your blog to get to the top of the search results.

As you can imagine, coming up with new posts for your blogging business will become increasingly difficult if you are not passionate about the topic. Those who choose a niche based on the amount of money they think will be generated will find it difficult to stay on track and not become bored with blogging. Choose a topic that you are passionate about so that you can stay interested in the work that is required for your blog.

Remain consistent in your blogging business. To get to the top of the search engine results pages, you must keep your blog fresh and relevant. Most people don’t go past the first couple of pages of a search result and some don’t even go past the first page. Your blog will only get these kinds of results if you regularly post useful and relevant information. If you love your topic, this will not be difficult.

Successfully Using Blog Entry Titles

robotrumpusThere are a number of different solutions that can be used by successful bloggers in order to bring attention to their posts, simply by using titles effectively. There is no real right or wrong answer when it comes to writing out a good title for your blog, and choosing a good title is a little bit subjective if you think about it. Having said this, however, there are a few tips that can help you improve the quality of your blog titles in order to appeal to search engines and your readers.

1 – Keep things simplistic.

Shorter titles are preferred for search engines, and they are also best for readers. If you can possibly keep your title below 40 characters, you will more than likely have the best results. Breaking this rule can draw attention to your blog, but it is not always the best way to go.

2 – Strive to grab your reader’s attention.

Good titles are largely what set your posts apart from the other clutter around them, drawing your readers in by any necessary means. There are a lot of ways that you can grab attention including writing shocking titles, titles with big claims, controversial titles or even confusing titles. Grabbing attention is a good way to write a useful title.

3 – Make every title meet a need.

Readers online are looking to have problems solved and needs met. Give them titles that show them that you have a solution to their need or problem, and your blog posts absolutely will attract an increase in information.

4 – Use descriptive words.

Some readers may like cryptic and confusing titles, but most of your readers are going to prefer descriptive ones that get straight to the point. Make sure that your titles describe exactly what is in the body of your post. Describing your titles well when writing about your blog entries is another great way to make the following tip easier:

5 – Fit keywords in when possible.

Keywords are important if you want your titles to contribute to your SEO process. This may be a little challenging when trying to keep your titles short and sweet, but incorporating a keyword into your title is vital if you want SEO to play a part in your blogging endeavor. Pick a few keywords that are vital to the concept of your blog, and fit them in as often as you can. This will have a profound impact on your ability to bring traffic to your blog.

6 – Take your time when choosing titles.

You don’t really need to rush when writing out your titles for your blogs. Take as much time as you take writing the actual blog itself, because writing a good title is about more than just slapping something random on without paying much attention to the message. Take your time when you’re choosing your blog titles, and your readers will surely take notice.

Top 10 Tips for Writing a Blog

writing15Most of the rules and tips that are associated with writing for eZines and newsletters also apply to writing blog entries, though there are some truly important differences as well. If you keep these top ten tips for writing a blog entry in mind, you will be creating excellent blog content in no time at all.

1 – Write with the reader in mind.

What is in it for your readers? “WIIFM” is jargon for “What’s in it for me?” in the marketing world, and this is what you need to be keeping in mind with every post that you write.

2 – Make your content worthwhile and valuable.

Do not waste people’s time by posting content that is not worthwhile or valuable. If you do not have anything to say, don’t bother blogging. Review books, share articles, conduct interviews. There is plenty to say, so say it.

3 – Proof read every entry and comment.

Look for typos and for grammatical errors. Don’t publish spelling mistakes. Polish your content to show that you respect your readers.

4 – Keep posts short and simple.

Keep things short and simple, because most people simply skim and scan over material. People do not have a lot of time, so do not burden them with too much information unless you have a really good reason to post lengthy entries in your blog.

5 – Keep your blog lively.

Your blog should be snappy and snazzy, interesting and lively. Write like you are having a conversation with a friend, and get to the point quickly. Make sure to touch on the who, what, where, when and why.

6 – Provide plenty of links.

Building links builds credibility, and it positions you as an expert in the industry or niche that you are posting about. People do not have time to know what everyone else is doing, so you should tell them by sharing links in your blog entries. Link other blogs and websites to build a network of associates online.

7 – Use keywords as often as possible.

Using keywords that are relevant to your niche will keep you on task, help search engines find you, and attract more traffic to your website. Your rankings will go up, and people will find you more easily than ever online.

8 – Write clearly.

Make sure to use short sentences, and touch on only a single concept per sentence. Do not use double speak, do not use jargon, and do not overwhelm your readers by cramming more than a single idea into each sentence. Spoon feed your content to your readers and they will return to your blog for more.

9 – Write in the same way that you talk.

It is okay to use common expressions and to write conversationally. Let your blog be fluid, conversational and friendly, and your readers will keep coming back for more.

10 – Use a headline that is clear, concise and descriptive.

Effective Ways to Get Traffic to Affiliate Sites

Traffic is one of the most difficult things to get as an affiliate. How do you get it without wasting your money and how do you get traffic that actually converts into sales or leads? One thing is absolutely clear to any affiliate who gets started promoting products: it’s virtually impossible to make money without a substantial stream of consistent and targeted traffic. Some methods and channels are more effective than others. Let’s take a look at the most effective ways to get traffic to affiliate sites, without going crazy in the process.

Method #1 – Web 2.0 Marketing. What are these exactly? It’s a blanket category that includes everything from article directories like Ezinearticles.com to social and informative sites like Hubpages or Squidoo. These sites can be used to promote your site by building valuable and informative content and then linking back to your main site. If all goes well your web 2.0 properties will rank well in the search engines, get traffic and then you can help direct that traffic from your web 2.0 properties right to your “money” site. You can use these web properties to pre-sell the traffic and get them warmed up for a full on sales pitch, so in many ways this is superior to just sending paid traffic straight to a landing page or blog.

Method #2 – Pay Per Click Marketing. This comes in many different forms. You can purchase traffic through pay per click networks like Google Adwords or even purchase banner space on a site that gets traffic related to your audience or demographic. The idea here is to instantly get traffic, but you pay a premium for it. The only way to make this work is to earn more then you’re spending on traffic. The difference becomes your profit. In many ways you’re simply brokering traffic when you get into paid traffic sources but this is arguably one of fastest and most efficient ways to make big paydays online. Some of the most popular pay per click networks is Google Adwords, MSN Adcenter and Yahoo! Small Business Advertising.

Method #3 – Viral Reports. A great way to get more traffic and get attention that draws in even more traffic is to go viral. This is easier said than done, but once it’s done right it works for years to drive traffic. Depending on your niche write up a short PDF report you can give away on your blog or via mailing list and encourage people to give it away and distribute it. Throughout the report include links back to your site and maybe even an affiliate link. If you put effort into making a quality report that answers a lot of questions or solves a problem, you can expect the report to get distributed and draw in more traffic to your site.

Using Blogger is a Mistake

bvswpBlogger is one of a number of different blogging platforms out there, but it is not the most ideal way to go for most blogging purposes. While there are benefits to using blogger when you are just starting out when it comes to blogging, using blogger is a mistake later on when you are trying to grow and develop your blog. Not only is blogger not ideal because it is a hosted blog that you do not have as much control over, but there are also a number of features that some blogging platforms offer that blogger hasn’t even come close to offering. The reason why blogging platforms like WordPress are considered to be ideal is because WordPress offers a number of extremely important features that Blogger isn’t making available yet.

First of all, you can set a WordPress blog up to automatically ping RSS and blog feed directories each and every time that you make a blog post. This is an extremely powerful blogging feature, at least if you are looking to generate a large amount of traffic for your blog right away. On top of this, because WordPress will be doing all of the pinging for you, you will be creating a lot of automatic backlinks to your blog almost instantaneously.

Think about how long it would normally take you to build a website, get the search engines to pay attention to it, earn backlinks from other pages to improve your search engine listings and to start earning traffic. Instead of having to do all of this work yourself, consider creating a WordPress blog that will do all of the work for you automatically.

Secondly, WordPress allows the use of categories, which are a really powerful way for you to improve the structure of your website, not only for human visitors but also for search engines as well. If the main topic of your website is widgets, for example, then you can create a category for blog posts about black widgets, another category for green widgets, and finally a category for orange widgets. Then when you add posts to your blog, you can decide which categories the post belongs to. Then your blog will automatically archive all of your posts not only by the month and the date but also by the category that the post most closely corresponds to.

If you have a visitor that is especially interested in widgets of a certain color then, they can easily find all of your posts on that particular subject rather than having to go through all of your archives to find a certain post.

WordPress and other similar blogging platforms offer a wide variety of additional options and features that Blogger simply cannot offer. While blogger is an excellent jumping off point for brand new blogs in certain situations, it is by no means a good answer on a long term basis.

Tips for Writing Your Blog

cupcompWhether you are blogging for business applications, or for personal growth, the process of writing daily is a rewarding activity in many ways. The individual writer is able to benefit from the satisfaction that is gained from personal reflection. Blogs afford the writer the means to distribute information and ideas everywhere the internet can reach. For the business, blogs enable a conduit within which real time feedback and communication with customers can occur, as well as dissemination of information in order to bolster a company’s credibility with peers and customers.

When it comes to writing a blog, there are various techniques that one can employ. One such technique is the implementation of Search Engine Optimization methods, where by the blog is ranked higher in search engines through manipulation of how the algorithms work. This is usually done by careful cross linking, adding blog keywords, including terms similar in meaning, and other similar steps.

Choosing the keywords for blog posts can also serve to provide focus to writing. Knowing the keywords for a blog’s post of the day will enable you to make sure your post stays on point. You can also use the keywords to make sure that you are not very repetitive, by avoiding using the same keywords constantly. You can use the keywords to ensure that your posts cover a variety of topics, even within a particular area of interest.

Another writing tip is to make sure you are posting in great frequency, with at least a post a day. If that cannot be managed, then one should at the very least shoot for a couple of posts over a week. Traffic to a blog tends to be proportionate to how often one posts in the blog. The posts should have value and be interesting and relevant. One should not write just to write, there should be meat to blog postings.

The average web reader will have 96 seconds worth of focus. That means they will read your posts for only about a minute and a half. So blog posts should be short and to the point, making sure that the most important information appears at the beginning. Well written posts will captivate the interest of the readers, and be within three to six hundred words in length.

In line with keeping posts short, limit posts to one important topic. Scatter shot posting will fail to keep interest for very long. Rather, the successful blogger will keep postings focused on single points. If there are multiple directions you wish to cover, turn them into blog posts, and distribute them over the week. This will help to make sure that postings stay regular, especially during those patches of time where writers block can hit.

One of the most important decisions the blogger can make is the domain and blog titles. This is essentially branding, creating a name that is memorable to your readers and will give them avenue to keep returning to your blog. It should be on point, related to the theme of your blog, and well thought out.

Simple Tips for a Popular Blog

doublesBlogs are, hands down, one of the easiest possible ways for you to publish your thoughts or messages on the internet. Blogs are excellent for spiking search engine enthusiasm, meaning that by writing in a blog you can easily attract plenty of traffic. But are you aware of what you should and should not do when it comes to setting your blog up in order to attract the maximum amount of traffic for all of the effort that you are putting in your blogging effort? Here are some simple tips for how you can significantly increase traffic to your blog, creating a popular blog out of your modest writing effort.

Step 1 – First and foremost, you need to make sure that you are using the right blogging platform.

Do not fall into the trap of using a free blogging platform for your website. These may be an excellent solution for keeping your costs down, but you end up relying on someone else’s computer, and if their server goes down, you could potentially lose everything. So while it may seem wise to start off on LiveJournal or Blogger, just don’t do it! If you want to create a secure blog, you should spend some extra money to make sure that you are in control of your own blogging endeavor.

Step 2 – The second consideration is to absolutely never, ever duplicate your content.

If you are using the default settings on a blog platform like WordPress, then your blog posts are going to appear in a number of different locations on your website, including your main page, your post page, your category page and your archive page. Unfortunately, most search engines are going to view this as duplicate content, and you may end up being penalized if you do not clean it up. Make sure that your settings are not sabotaging your blogging effort.

Step 3 – Finally, and perhaps most importantly, post as often as you possibly can.

Search engines are intelligent enough that they can tell roughly how often you are posting in your blog. Search engines are always on the look out for content that is fresh and new. The more often you are capable of posting to your blog, the better off you will be. Daily is always best, but every other day or twice a week are also acceptable solutions. Make sure that you are posting useful and relevant content when you post, rather than simply posting for the sake of search engine spiders, because your readers and subscribers matter most of all.

These tips may seem simple, but they are extremely important when it comes to preparing your blog for good, long term traffic. The more popular your blog becomes, the more viral it will be in attracting new, unique visitors every day, week and month.
