Meta Tag Use for SEO

metaWhen it comes to search engine optimization for a website, one of the key strategies that you should be using is to make use of meta tags on every individual web page within your site, especially when it comes to the title tag. So what is the title tag, and how can meta tags be used for search engine optimization in order to increase your search engine page ranking?

The title meta tag is the tag that search engines are relying heavily upon in order to determine what a specific website or web page is actually about. The best way to create a title tag is to create a short and concise description of what the web page is about that makes use of one or a couple of the web page’s primary keywords. One of the most common mistakes that is made when creating meta title tags is that people often try to stuff too many keywords into the title. The search engines may interpret this as being keyword stuffing, which is a frowned upon practice that search engines do not like, and putting too many keywords in your title tag may also take importance away from the keywords that are the most relevant.

Another thing that you need to keep in mind with your meta title tags is that your title tags will be visible in the search engine results with the link to your website. You want to keep a nice balance between readability and enticing nature in order to attract humans and search engines alike. If your title tag is only search engine friendly but not human reader friendly, then you will not get many return visitors. No one is going to want to follow a link if it looks like a bunch of gibberish, even if it is coming up high in the results on a search engine for your keywords.

When reading the title tag for your web page, search engines give the most importance to the beginning of the title. The shorter the title, the more weight each word will end up receiving as a result. If you use a longer title that has more words, then each word is going to seem less important and therefore less relevant when it comes to the search engine results.

You should only be using the words that are absolutely necessary, and that have the most relevant use. Don’t simply string together a bunch of useless keywords because it will not benefit anyone.

Creating meta tags that are friendly both to visitors and search engines can be tricky, but it is an important part of optimizing your site as a whole and every individual web page for search engine friendliness while still appealing to your human visitors. It is the balance between the two that makes for a good website.
