February 8th, 2012 — Advertising, Blogging, Web Traffic
If you want to monetize your blog, you have to ask yourself a series of questions, starting with what kind of blog is it, and do you have any readers? If you’re not getting readers at your blog, you might as well put all your money-making plans on hold. Even if you got the greatest pay-per-click program in existence with the highest rates (which won’t happen if you don’t have readers) you can’t make money because there’s no one there to click the ads. Generate traffic first, and then worry about monetizing your blog.
If you have a steady stream of traffic, then the best ways to make money from your blog depend on the type of blog you have. If your blog is a general interest blog, it’s probably harder to make money from that than a specialized niche blog. Of course, if you have thousands and thousands of readers, you can run general advertising for things people typically need like credit cards, mortgages, insurance and very general basic things.
If your blog is general interest, though, no one is coming to your blog searching for cheap insurance, the best way to refinance a mortgage, or a better rate on a credit card. They’re coming to read how you burned the cookies, your thoughts on today’s politics, and the latest celebrity gossip, or whatever you’re blogging about.
But if you pull in thousands of unique visitors over a month, you could still make some money from these kinds of advertisers because a certain percentage of them will click the ads, and a certain small percentage of them might buy. This is a hard way to monetize that requires thousands and thousands of readers.
If your blog is smaller and more of a niche blog, you have many more options. Lots of people use Café Press or other sites that will print custom t-shirts, mugs and items for you. You could have some principle of your blog, your logo, or some great concepts you created printed on these items and link to them from your blog.
You can use the mother of blog money-makers, pay-per-click ads like those through Google and Yahoo. Don’t just sign up and assume it’s all automated, though. You have to watch the ads that show up, the click-through rates, and your pricing. If the ads that are showing up aren’t targeted closely enough and aren’t getting good click-through rates, you’ll get less per click than otherwise .So watch your statistics and make adjustments as needed. These pull off your keywords, so be keyword focused when you write posts.
Affiliate marketing is a top way to monetize a blog, too. If your blog is about how to lose weight, for instance, you can promote a weight loss product or information that has an affiliate program. When people follow your link to that product and buy it, you get a commission. The more narrow your niche, the easier it is to monetize your blog because the people coming there are looking for specific information and products.

Related Posts: This plug-in shows a linked list of related posts at the bottom of a post. This is excellent for keeping readers at your blog. These are best for very niche blogs on a specific topic.

WP Captcha-Free: This plug-in stops automated commenting without requiring each commenter to type in a hard-to-read captcha. This blog plug-in is designed more for bot and automated spam comments, while Askimet catches individually posted comments, too.

January 23rd, 2012 — Blog Tips, Blogging, Writing for Your Blog
Whether your blog is about general interest topics like how you washed a crayon in your son’s pocket and there’s a new bank going up in town, or you have a niche blog designed to make money, the same basic blogging strategies apply if you want to be a top blogger.
Post Regularly: You don’t have to post every day. But if you can, do it. Post every other day or 3 or 4 times a week. The more regularly you post (especially if you have good SEO optimized titles) the better your blog will look to the search engines.
Post In-Depth: If you post every day and you’re not fond of writing, this might be difficult. But maybe you can do it twice a week, or even once, and have shorter posts the rest of the time. If your post is long and full of information that almost always makes it better than a short post. First, it’ll contain more keywords and probably help your search engine listings. Second, it’ll contain more information that might lead others to different parts of your blog if you’re linking correctly. And finally, a long post just gives you more space in which to connect with your reader.
Post for the Readers: Search engine optimization is important if you want people to be able to find you through search engines. But if your blog post reads like it was written for a keyword-searching bot, the reader will know it. Make sure you write for those real people who will be reading the post, not just for the search engine spiders.
Connect with your Readers: While it’s important to write for them by including actual content and not just sentence after sentence stuffed with keywords, you still have to engage them. If the contest interesting but written in a wholly uninteresting way, readers aren’t going to be that thrilled. If you’re worked up about the idea of writing, just decide to write like you speak. This isn’t a legal document or a literary publication submission. If your language is pompous sounding, you’ll put people off. Just write in a manner like you speak, and leave the formal language to lawyers and people from the 18th century.
Rein in Your Sales Message: If you’re using a blog to sell something, it’s okay to sell it. You can point it out to people, talk about it, hype it up a little. But you can’t do that all the time. If every post is touting the benefits of your new product, then there’s not much point in people coming back unless they’re already interesting in your product. People interested in your general subject will go elsewhere.
Don’t fill your posts with fluff and then try to sell to people on your blog. If you’re selling an e-book about 100 rainmaking techniques, offer up 3 in a blog post and then lead them to your ebook.
Keeping the readers and their needs in your mind is the key in all the best and most successful blogging strategies.

January 1st, 2012 — Blogging, Subject/Topic
Are you already participating in the creation of a blog? If you are not out there blogging already, then you are definitely missing out on a truly booming market, not to mention what is essentially one of the latest and greatest fads on the internet. Today it seems as if everyone is blogging these days. If your parents or grand parents have a computer, they may even be blogging! Blogging is not just about being fun anymore, but instead it has become a serious business that really seems to be taking off. There are people out there who are making a living blogging full time simply by writing in a blog every day. Can you imagine spending a little bit of time blogging online and making enough money to survive on?
There are basically two different types of blogging: Regular blogging and niche blogging. Niche blogging is where the real money is right now. If you can learn how niche blogging functions, then you can make money online just like everyone else. Here is how niche blogging works: First you do some research to find out what types of niches are becoming popular. Then you create a blog on one of these niche topics. Then you find affiliate products that relate to the blog that you are writing in. Now you write a blog entry every single day. Market your blog as much as you possibly can, and collect the money when it begins to roll in. That sounds fairly simple, does it not?
Once you get the hang of things, they definitely are simple – But starting out at the beginning takes a little bit more work, and it will take some thought and some serious research. First you need to research your niche and figure out what you should be blogging about. Your niche should be unique, but it should also meet a need or supply a solution to a problem that will have people looking for you. Your blog should be unique even if your niche is not completely unique – So find a unique solution, unique information or something else that makes you special, and begin blogging. It is also important to find keywords that people will be using to find your niche – The keyword research part of the process should take a while, and a lot of thought, but the more work you put into the process, the more that it will pay off in the end. If you want to compete with other bloggers operating within your niche, then you need to be using keywords effectively because it makes all the difference.
If you are having trouble coming up with a niche, try to find something that interests you and go from there. Think of a problem that you have, and find a solution. Now market that solution to the other people in the world who have the same problem and you have an instant niche. Blog about it every day, and your blog truly can become a source of income for you.

If you are looking to increase your awareness on Twitter, one of the best things that you can do is to explore the capabilities of Hashtags, which are capable of helping you to add significant value to your brand while quickly expanding your visibility at the same time. On Twitter, a hashtag is a fun little tool that makes it easier for readers to track conversations, topics, communities and other events. An example of a popular hashtag and what is being achieved with it is #followfriday, which is a hashtag used for people to recommend other people that are fun to follow on Twitter. For example, you might say. “Hey, check out [@Userid]. #followfriday”
While some people do not go out actively looking for hashtags, they are easy to find in popular conversations and can take you on quite an adventure through Twitter. If you are looking for a way to expand your horizons on Twitter, or if you are looking for a way to expand your own visibility, then these hashtags are absolutely a solid proposition worth considering. Here are some great Twitter and hashtag related resources that you should be checking out, bookmarking and more than likely frequently visiting:
- * http://www.hashtags.org is the first place that you should head when you are looking to see what hashtags are currently hot or just the most recent, as this site tracks popularity trends as is jam packed with good information.
- * http://www.twemes.com is another exceptional resource for when it comes to discovering new hashtags and then tracking them once you’ve found them. There is even a hashtag cloud, which is a nice feature as well.
- * http://www.wthashtag.com is a wiki of hashtags generated by those using them. If you are still learning what hashtags are or how they work, then this is an excellent resource for you to check out.
All kinds of people are using hashtags on Twitter in order to connect with other people that have to do with their topic, niche, challenge, club or group. Hashtags are making viral marketing around a specific subject easier than ever. It has become simpler than ever to find buzz around a specific topic, and this can pay off for people looking for certain topics just as well as those who are talking about them.
You can make it really easy for other people within your niche to communicate with one another through the use of hashtags. If you have a group or a niche, you can create a hashtag for it, and then when other people are talking about it, they can use the hashtag to make sure that their buzz is linked back to the campaign that you are running. This way, all of the participants in the niche can share with one another, creating some truly viral collaboration. This is an excellent example of how Twittering can work to your advantage in many different ways.

December 25th, 2011 — Advertising, Social Networking/Bookmarking, Web Traffic
If you are not already making use of Facebook as a method of marketing your business or niche, then you are absolutely missing out on a great opportunity to reach out to hundreds of millions of active users. Today, Facebook has become one of the most popular online social networking websites, making it a veritable untapped network for traffic and business. People spend a great amount of time online on the Facebook website looking to make new friends, interact with people, play games and interact within interest groups. When you make it possible for your advertising message to travel to these people through Facebook, you will absolutely see a spike in the amount of website traffic that you attract, and you will also see more members, more subscriptions, more sales and more inquiries as well.
One of the biggest questions that people ask is how it could be possible for a business to leverage Facebook for the purpose of marketing a product or a service. Here are three of the possible ways for you to advertise your business, product or service through Facebook social networking.
1 – Social Ads on Facebook –
This is one of the most straight forward ways that you can promote yourself on Facebook. You can use social ads to target people based on a number of different functions including age group, gender and interest for example. By targeting your ads in this manner, you can increase your CTR, which is your click through rate. This will give you more visitors to your site and also an increase in the number of customers that you are able to attract. Make sure to throw a picture up in your ads because ads with images capture more attention and tend to attract more clicks as well.
2 – Groups and Pages on Facebook –
You can create groups and pages for your business, company or website on Facebook, and then you can get people to become a fan of your page or to join your group. Use the invite function for groups to get all of your friends to join, or tell your friends about your page so that they can become a fan. Both pages and groups are two excellent channels that you can use to gather more potential customers as well as to build more brand awareness on Facebook.
3 – Facebook Word of Mouth –
Selling to a friend is always going to be easier than selling the same thing to a stranger. You should try to get to know more friends simply because there are so many active users on the Facebook site. Join groups with some kind of relation to your product or your business and socialize with the members of those groups to make new friends and acquaintances. When people get to know your business and begin to really trust it, they will be much more likely to buy from you.

December 19th, 2011 — Blog Tips, Content Ideas, Guest Blogger, Writing for Your Blog
Do you struggle to come up with new and interesting topics to write about for your blog? If so, I have a process for coming up with new ideas consistently that you can adapt and use for yourself. If you do, you’ll never have to sweat it out again, promise.
See, I used to be like you, but now I come up with topics regularly without any trouble at all. If I ever hit what feels like a dry spell, I usually can figure out something to write about very quickly because of how I set myself up. This method is really simple and you can implement these suggestions right away for similar results. Here’s how I stay fresh in an easy three step process:
1. I read or at least glance at the blogs in my google reader every day. There’s upwards of a 125 blogs on romance novels that I follow, and while you might follow more or less, it’s a really good place to start. Something another blogger writes on in my niche can always be expanded, argued, changed, or even spark ideas. It is the same case in your niche. If the bloggers you currently follow are not inspiring you, (unfollow them and) find others to follow.
2. I keep a small notebook on my person. It is usually in my purse (it helps to be a girl sometimes
). If an idea comes to me not only can I write down the topic really quickly, but I can also start writing it and organizing points. Scrap paper works too, but you might lose it. That’s happened to me once or twice, hence the mini-notebook.
3. Suggest topics to others. Sometimes when I have guest bloggers on my site, they ask me for help with topic suggestions. I don’t know about you but it’s very easy to come up with ideas for others. I usually give a list of 3-5 ideas and saved the 2-4 the blogger doesn’t pick in a document on my computer. If I ever have trouble for myself I can always sneak a look through the list and figure something out. More often than not, suggesting topics of interest to someone else will also help me think up topics for myself. When you think out of the box you just might find a gem or two to polish up.
So that’s how I come up with content for my blog. Very simple, but very practical if I say so myself. What do you do to keep yourself fresh? Share your methods in the comments!

December 7th, 2011 — Blog Tips, Blogging, Guest Blogger
That’s right, I said it. You’re not blogging correctly. This two part article series will expand on my previous post, 4 Things Bloggers Do WRONG!
There are a ton of blogs that are already established and a ton of new blogs getting started every single day. You won’t stand out by making the mistakes other blogs make. Below are some things that I see wrong and avoid like crazy because they drive me crazy and I’m sure you’ll agree:
Hodgepodge Blogs
This is why you niche out your blog. Pick a topic. Write on that topic. End of story.
Do not post about your life unless your life has to do with that blog topic. If you’re a fishing blog I don’t want to see Project Runway on your blog unless you ran into a cast member fishing and they caught something or did something silly and you have proof of it (e.g. a photo or video clip). If you’re not a political blog I don’t want to read about Obama and what you think of the latest happenings in Washington D.C. Why? Because I simply don’t care, and neither do your readers.
You are not a lifestyle magazine. You are not a newspaper. Let me repeat – stay on topic! That’s right, no off topic posts for you. Keep your personal opinions on life in general and random thoughts off the blog unless your blog is about those things… and honestly, unless you’re somebody famous it shouldn’t be. Personal blogs are not something I subscribe to. I want information and clever articles about the topics that interest me from the people who write them.
Blog Article Titles
Even though you’re not a newspaper, you’re not excused from bland titles. You lose more readers than you know with generic titles. Why do you think headlines are so important? The bigger font isn’t there to just look pretty it’s there to grab your attention.
I skip right by a lot of posts in my Google Reader because nothing in the title made me think it was worth spending two seconds clicking the link to go see the post. That’s right I view my blogs rss feeds in List Format. You have to when you subscribe to as many blogs as I do.
So what are bad titles?
For example, I hate seeing posts entitled: SOMEBODY’S NAME Guest Blogs or some variation of the same. I have no idea who that person is and why would I care if they guest blogged? Why don’t you give me a title that refers to the topic of their guest blog?
Similarly don’t get cutesy. If you’re reviewing a product, give me the product in the title of the post not the name you would have called it yourself if you were on the naming committee. How will I ever know what you’re really talking about at a glance?
Keira runs a book review blog for readers by readers on romance novels entitled Love Romance Passion. She’s been reading romance since she was in her teens and began blogging about romance so she could share her passion for her favorite genre.
