If you have a blog, you may be wondering if you need to have a blog sitemap. What is a blog sitemap and what does having a blog sitemap mean for your website? A blog sitemap is a collection of links outlining the structure of your entire website. These links make it possible for your visitors to navigate quickly and easily to any section of your website as long as it is listed properly in your sitemap. The purpose of a blog sitemap is to make finding posts and pages easier by listing all of them in one place. There are a number of advantages that are associated with having a sitemap. So much so, in fact, that not having a blog sitemap is actually harmful to the productivity and functionality of your website.

So, what are the advantages associated with having a blog sitemap?

In addition to making it significantly easier for the visitors to your blog to navigate through your site, your blog sitemap is also going to make it significantly easier for search engine spiders to move through your site as well. This is going to improve the search engine optimization for your site by ensuring that every one of the pages on your site is capable of being found. This is going to increase your visibility in the search engines which in turn is going to increase the amount of traffic that your website generates.

Since most online search engines only follow a specific number of links going from a page, having your own blog sitemap is going to make sure that both visitors and search engines can access every piece of content on your website, not just some of it or most of it.

So, do you need a blog sitemap?

Whether or not you need a blog sitemap is largely going to depend on the type of website that you are running. If you do not have a lot of content yet, then a sitemap may not be necessary. On the other hand, if you are writing a blog and posting every day, as your page grows to include more content, having your own blog sitemap is going to be vitally important to the success of your site. Having a blog sitemap is going to make sure that people can find and read your content. It is going to make sure that the search engines spider and crawl your website. And when these things happen – That is when blog success happens.

So how do you get a sitemap?

If you have WordPress or Blogger, you should already be able to put up a sitemap based on plugins and code that is already set up. Otherwise, find a XML sitemap generating tool and get to work. You shouldn’t need to create your own sitemap from scratch – There are dynamic tools that can make it happen for you.

If you use Blogger in order to manage your blog then you have available to you hundreds of gadgets that Google has released; all of which can add features to your blog. - HTML/JavaScript.

This gadget allows you to add a feed from other blogs, directories, or other forms of news services. You can also reinforce a relationship with another blog not only trading RSS feeds, but also guest posts and more, effectively combining your readerships.

- Followers.

This is a way for you to follow other bloggers and for others to follow you anonymously. Think RSS meets Twitter. It is an easy way to generate traffic to your website, as if you start to follow others, they may start to follow you. You can also use this as a form of gauge, counting your readers and followers.

- Google Docs.

If your blog talks about spreadsheets or other documents, you can provide templates that users can copy and use for their own needs. This allows you to provide your readers with much more than plain content. For example, a finance blog could add links to spreadsheets that implement techniques that are described in your blog. The added benefit is that if your templates are publicly listed, then visitors finding the templates will be directed to your blog in order to learn how to use the docs.

- AdSense.

If you are in it to make money, then adding AdSense to your blog is a great way to start. Google’s technology works well with Google’s technology, and adding AdSense to your blog will be seamless. You will need to have an account with AdSense first, and it is good to run the blog for a while to generate traffic before adding the gadget. Then you can just add the code and it will integrate seamlessly. Then you will start to generate revenue from your writing.

Adding a gadget is simple, just go to your dashboard and add it. Gadgets provide a functionality that will enhance your blog and your reader’s experience.

Blog feeds or RSS feeds allow for feed readers to access a site that automatically looks for new content from all of their favorite blogs. By syndicating your blog through an RSS feed you can allow your readership to access all of your new blog posts without requiring them to actually visit your blog. They can still click through to visit your blog, especially for the purpose of leaving comments or participating in the conversation, but not having to visit your site every day in search of new content is a great way to improve your readership. Most people who are reading blogs online in this day and age are using RSS feed readers to allow them to keep up with syndicated content from all of their favorite websites and blogs, so if you are not already syndicating your blog through an RSS feed, then you are probably depriving yourself of a large proportion of readers that you were completely unaware of.

So what is an RSS Feed?

Simply put, an RSS feed allows for easy online content distribution. RSS feeds can be read as plain text files, but they are actually designed to be read through RSS feed readers, and there are a wide variety of different RSS feed readers to choose from. Readers can vary from being standalone applications, to being completely online based web applications.

How can you publish a blog feed?

If you are using a blogging platform like WordPress, then you are actually in luck because WordPress has a built in RSS feed functionality that allows you to syndicate your blog posts without even knowing it in certain circumstances. If you are using any other blogging platform, however, you are going to have to look into whether or not the RSS syndicating is being done for you or not. You may have to look for an appropriate plugin to make sure that you can automatically syndicate your blog posts to an RSS feed. To view your WordPress blog RSS feed, you simply need to navigate to http://www.yourdomainname.com/blog/feed or http://www.yourdomainname.com/feed depending on how you have your blog location set up. Feedburner provide services allowing RSS publishers to expand on the features that are already being provided by their basic feed by burning their feed, which allows for the following benefits:

- Feed burning allows you to view detailed stats about your blog feed readership,
- Feed burning allows your readers to subscribe to your RSS feed easily no matter what feed reader they happen to be using,
- Feed burning allows you to better format your RSS feeds for different directories and readers,
