Driving Traffic to Your Blog

ladderMany blog owners spend a good portion of their time trying to figure out how to generate traffic to their blog. This is especially true when it comes to a brand new blog that is not yet really rich in meaningful and effective content. Generating visitor traffic to your blog is an endeavor that is going to take some basic effort on your part. Thankfully due to modern technology, the task of attracting interested people to your blog is a lot easier now than in the past.

The most common online blogging platforms are WordPress and Blogger. Both have hosted blog solutions, but WordPress also has an open source solution for installing the WordPress platform onto your own domain name. If you put the following tips into practice, it is more than possible for you to begin attracting traffic to your blog as early as on the first day. Within 24 hours of creating a blog you can begin to generate traffic, and if the purpose of your blog is to sell a product, you could be making sales just as quickly.

1 – Every blog has an RSS feed.

By submitting your RSS feed to the most popular online feed services, you will be able to attract website traffic very quickly, especially if you are focusing your blog content on specific keywords that have lower competition in search engine ranks. All that you need to be able to do is to submit the URL for your feed to a wide range of different free services as soon as you actually have a live site to promote. Some of the most widely recognized feed sites are:

- Feedage.com
- Feedagg.com
- Feedraider.com
- Feedfury.com
- Feedsubmitter.com
- Feedest.com
- Search4rss.com

2 – Social bookmarking involves creating bookmarks for your blog.

Additionally social bookmarking is meant for displaying information about what your blog centers on and what it has to offer. It is important that you use social bookmarking responsibly rather than spamming these websites. Simply write a short post that explains in a little bit of detail why your site or product will interest the people that you want to visit it. There are a myriad of different social bookmarking websites out there, including but not limited to:

- Digg.com
- YahooBuzz
- Technorati.com
- Del.icio.us
- Propeller
- StumbleUpon
- Reddit
- Mixx
- Fark
- MyBlogLog

3 – Social networking, on the other hand, is a little different.

When you create an account on a social networking website, you put together a profile that allows you to connect with other people, creating powerful partnerships and even a fan following in the right circumstances. These networks and relationships will facilitate the capability for you to promote your sites and protects, although much more subtlety than through other sources. Here are a few of the most popular social networking websites:

- FaceBook
- MySpace
- Classmates Online
- MSN Groups
- Yahoo Groups
- Xanga

10 Steps to Start a Blog

bloggingIs this your first time starting a blog? Here is a ten step checklist for starting your own blog.

1 – Choose a subject –

Determine what it is that you want to blog about. You need to have a concept before you can start writing about, so that you can appeal to the right niche. Your blog will die if you do not take the time to come up with a good subject that you can blog about.

2 – Title –

Come up with a title that is catchy, entertaining and easy for people to remember. Make your blog title catchy and interesting if you want it to attract readers.

3 – Buy a Domain Name –

Now you need to buy a domain name that is both easy to remember and related to your title. Domain names really matter in this day and age because they let potential readers know what your site is all about. Once you have a title and a subject, you need to create a domain name that will help readers find your site.

4 – Choose a blogging platform –

Try considering both your needs and your budget when you consider blogging platforms. Some blogging platforms like blogger are free or inexpensive, while others cost a little more but offer greater benefits. Another excellent blogging platform is WordPress, which is free and easy to use.

5 – Find a Web Host –

Unless you are hosting your blog on someone else’s server, the next step is to find an adequate website host. You need to find a web host that is reliable and offers the benefits and level of service that you need in order to get the most out of your blog.

6 – Find a flexible theme –

Not only do you need to find a flexible design theme, but you need to find one that you can easily edit to make your own. The design of your blog is part of your brand and concept. With a little CSS and HTML know how you can take a nice theme and really make it your own.

7 – Sign Up for Web Analytics –

With web analytics, you can figure out if you are doing the right thing, and if you are attracting the right people to your blog. Web analytics give you the stats that you need to determine what’s hot on your blog, what’s not hot, what most people are coming for, and which posts are more useful than others.

8 – Make your first post –

Let readers know what your blog is going to be all about.

9 – Start putting together real content –

The real challenge is creating real content on a long term basis. Research your facts, be sure about your information, and share your opinions, giving real content to your readers.

10 – Socialize, build relationships and readership –

Now that you have content, start socializing, meeting people, building readership and really getting your name out there. This is the fun part! Have fun, make friends, share information and build readers in the process and you will be good to go!

11 – Join the Blog Traffic Exchange

Once you have 30 or so posts the Blog Traffic Exchange will help grow your blog. How?

10 Benefits of Hosting your Own Blog

trafficIf you want to create an edge over many of the other bloggers on the web, then one of the best things that you can do is host your own blog. There are a number of benefits of hosting your own blog over having some other service host your blog. Here are ten of the most prevalent benefits.

1 – Professional Appearance –

Hosting your own blog gives your blog a professional appearance, because you can use your own domain name or website name and can host your blog on your own website. If you do not host your own blog, you will have a lengthy blog URL which will make it appear less professional and will make it more difficult for readers to recall the name and website for your blog.

2 – Design –

Another benefit of hosting your own blog is the fact that you have a lot more freedom regarding the design. When you host your own blog, you do not have to follow a pre set design but can design your own blog layout instead.

3 – Recall Ability –

By hosting your own blog, you can make your blog easier to recall among readers. What address do you think is easier to recall, http://www.blogsite.com or http://blogsite.blogger.com/~blogname? The easier your domain name is, the easier it will be for readers to recall it, and this is one of the greatest benefits for hosting your own blog.

4 – Content Control –

While there are not normally really strict guidelines regarding content, when you have your blog hosted by a blogging network, your choices in content can be restricted. By hosting your own blog, you can have much larger control over your content.

5 – Security –

By hosting your own blog on your own website, you can have more control over your security, and will be better able to protect your own blog rather relying on someone else to do it.

6 – Brand Promotion –

By hosting your own blog, it will be easier to develop and promote your own brand. Even if you are not selling something, hosting your own blog will provide greater individuality than what shared hosting can offer.

7 – Revenue Generation –

When you host your blog with someone else, you have less control over generating revenue. When you host your own blog, however, you have much greater control over how you generate revenue online.

8 – Growth –

While starting on a blogging network makes sense, if you want to grow your blog, you need to go independent. By hosting your own blog, you can create a much larger level of growth over time.

9 – Site Integration –

By hosting your own blog, you can integrate your blog with your website, rather than having to create a completely separate website from your blog.

10 – More Traffic –

Hosting your own blog will also allow you to generate more traffic, because your posts will be easier to find in search engines.

Tips for Improving Number of Blog Visitors

newspaperAll bloggers are looking for ways that they can improve the popularity of their blog, in order to increase the number of blog visitors. They work hard to make their blogs popular, and spend most of their spend time doing this. The longer that you blog, the more little tips and tricks you will learn to improve your number of blog visitors. Here are some of the tips and techniques that you can implement when your focus is on improving the number of blog visitors for your blog.

Tip #1 – Use your own domain name. If you are serious about blogging, and about increasing your blog visitors, you should buy a domain of your very own. When you have your own domain name, it will show people that you have a professional approach toward blogging. Choose your own domain name that is short, relevant and easy for blog visitors to remember.

Tip #2 – Update frequently if you want to make your blog truly successful. You should be updating on a regular basis and you should be writing content that appeals to your niche in order to maintain your blog visitors. When you update more frequently, search engines and people will be able to find your blog more easily.

Tip #3 – Contribute within the community. Search online on Google and find forums and other outlets for communication and collaboration that correspond with your niche. Add the URL for your blog into your forum signature so that when you provide relevant and useful information to the community, people will feel inspired to travel back to your blog via that link so that they can see what else you have to say.

Tip #4 – Participate in social media websites at least for an hour a day, including Digg and StumbleUpon for example. Develop a solid profile on these websites and submit popular sites and stories that you find on the internet that relate to your niche. You can submit stories from your own blog as well, but only in the mix with stories from other websites if you want good results.

Tip #5 – Participate in blog directories, especially top blog directories that have a good page rank and get a lot of blog visitors. Submit your blog in the right niche category and the blog visitors will begin to roll in.

Tip #6 – Find the top bloggers that are operating within your niche and read their blogs. Comment in their blogs, leaving not spam but rather informative and relevant comments that work well with the content posted there. Make sure to include a link back to your own blog so that those bloggers can check out what you have to say.

Coming Up with a Blog Niche

nookAre you beginning a brand new blog? One of the first decisions that you are going to want to make is where you want to put your blog, and then you are going to need to choose a blog niche. One of the best ways to get your blog started is by using the WordPress software, but hosting it on your own website is a lot more free and open than if you were to host on the WordPress website. You can literally get your blog set up in a few minutes when you use the WordPress software. If you want to host your WordPress blog niche website on another website besides WordPress.com then what you need to do is to find a domain name and to find an appropriate hosting company. Both of these things are capable of being sourced at really low costs if you know what to do and where to look.

Domains – There are a number of different registrars that are available when it comes to registering your own domain name so make sure that you do your research so that you can choose the one that is going to be best for you. Choosing a domain registrar means choosing one that has an interface that is easy to use and also a low or affordable cost. When choosing a domain name, make sure that it relates to your blog niche and make sure that you are using one of your most valuable primary keywords in order to get the best results. In some niches this may not be as easy, but when you consider how vitally important it is, it should make sense why you should take the time to achieve this. Choosing a clever name doesn’t hurt, but don’t spend too much time setting this part of your website up – You need to get to the good stuff!

Hosting - Just as there are a number of different domain registrars, there are also plenty of hosting options for you to choose from. Make sure that you are conducting good research and look to see what other people say about the option that you do decide to go with. Once you have your hosting and your domain name, find out about installing WordPress on your site. Many hosting companies offer a one-click option for word press, meaning that it will be installed automatically for you with the click of a button and only a little bit of required information, such as where you want your posts to go.

Choosing a blog niche and setting up your WordPress blog doesn’t have to be hard in any sense of the word. Once you know what you are doing you can really allow your blog niche to take off.

How to Relocate your WordPress Blog to a New Domain Name

Making the decision to move my blog from http://www.courseladder.com to http://www.golfballdriver.com was a big one, and a good one, and it taught me a lot about learning how to relocate your WordPress blog to a new domain name under the same hosting provider. Course Ladder suited me for a while, but from an SEO standpoint it was not a good domain name for me to stick with over a long term and I am glad for the change.

Golf Ball Driver is better than Course Ladder because…

  1. “Golf” in the domain name
  2. All domain words are highly relevant
  3. Direct golf product tie in
  4. It makes sense. What am I? A golf ball driver!
  5. The double entendre between the products and the persona.

gbd

What You Need to Do:

The first thing that you want to do is to create a new add on domain for the new domain name.

The next step in the process is to copy the entire contents of the old domain folder, which includes your entire WordPress blog, into the brand new domain folder within the same hosting area.

Next, there are a couple of SQL statements that you need to run:

* First, to update your WordPress options with the new location of your blog, the following SQL command needs to be put in:

UPDATE wp_options SET option_value = replace(option_value, 'http://www.old-domain.com', 'http://www.new-domain.com') WHERE option_name = 'home' OR option_name = 'siteurl';

Next, you are going to need to fix the URLs of your posts and pages on WordPress. The URL values are stored as absolute URLs rather than as relative URLs, so you need to use the following SQL query to change them.

UPDATE wp_posts SET guid = replace(guid, 'http://www.old-domain.com','http://www.new-domain.com');

If you have linked internally at any point within your blog posts or your pages using absolute URLs, then this links are going to be pointing to the wrong locations after you change the location of your blog. You need to use the following SQL commands in order to fix all of the internal linking in all of your WordPress posts and pages.

UPDATE wp_posts SET post_content = replace(post_content, 'http://www.old-domain.com', 'http://www.new-domain.com');

Once you have put all of these SQL queries into action, the next step is to browse through as much of your WordPress blog as you can in order to make sure that everything is in good working order. You are also going to need to login to your WP Administration section because the authentication cookie will become invalid when you change domains.

Now you can delete the old folder contents so that your blog is not appearing in two different places.

In order to 301 redirect all old links from the old domain to the new domain, place a single file .htaccess into the now empty folder. You want to be sure to 301 redirect else you will permanently lose any hard earned links you have developed. Here is what the file should contain:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^.old-domain.com$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.old-domain.com
RewriteRule ^/?(.*)$ "http://www.new-domain.com/$1" [R=301,L]

Finally, update your WordPress blog to have the new blog name in your title.

The process is relatively simple once you have a feel for what needs to be accomplished. Above all else, it is vital that you avoid upsetting your linking structure in the process. Make sure that all of your links are still valid and working after you make the big move, and your blog should be just fine, and more importantly, better off with an improved domain name.

Installing a WordPress Blog

wp1If you want to install WordPress on your own server, the first step is to download the necessary files from the website at WordPress.org download. Next, you will use an FTP program to upload the files to your host site. If you use Cpanel, you can use Fantastico in order to set up your database and files for the site. All you have to do is look for the Fantastico icon under Cpanel in the Blogs or Content Management System area of your hosting space. WordPress should be listed, along with a variety of other popular blogging formats. This creates for an extremely simple, one click installation and makes it quick and efficient to set up. Setting up WordPress this way literally takes only about a minute.

If you choose to install WordPress manually, it really does not take much longer, only about five minutes in comparison to one. Keeping track of your databases and database names is especially important if you will be working with multiple websites, so keep in mind that you may need something to keep track of all of the site names and their information. One simple way to accomplish this is to buy a rolodex and create a card for each of your sites. Add the relevant information to each web site on the card, including user names, passwords and other required information. This way, if you ever lose track of site information you can simply refer to the card and you will be just fine.

If you are installing WordPress manually, then you should be able to figure out what information needs to be written down as you go. The process will not be as obvious if the installation is done automatically.

Here are some basic tips for installing WordPress and having the installation go smoothly and comfortably:

- Use the public_html directory so that people will reach your blog when they type your domain name in the URL address locator rather than having to navigate around in search of your blog.

- Fill the title and tag line in. If you’re optimizing for SEO this is especially important but it should not be as difficult as some people make it. If you know what keywords to optimize for, it should not be that tricky for you to figure out.

- Delete any and all extraneous information, like sample posts, unnecessary tags, comments and posts and any other information that you do not need to be in your blog.

- Add an interesting theme rather than sticking with the one you get started with. There are thousands of unique WordPress themes out there, so choose one that suits the concept behind your blog and offers ease of readability and functionality. You may also be able to further customize the WordPress blog theme to suit your needs.
