I personally suggest a minimal set of meta tags, namely, Title, Description & Keywords

    * Title tag should be 5 to10 words, containing the company name and related keywords, 90 characters with spaces.
    * Description: Brief summary of the page, 170 characters with spaces.
    * Keyword tag: Keep it simple, short and relevant. 10 to 20 Keywords per page.

You've done it again - great tips on title management.

One thing that I've seen people do is put their sitename in the title. Now, that's all fine and dandy, but please heed the advice above (the fact that the first part of the title carries more weight than the last) and put your sitename last. That way, when Google indexes your page, your post title is first instead of the sitename.

Keep them coming!

From all the Meta tags available, the title one is probably the most important for Google. It is known that keywords tag no longer has a great importance for Google since the search engine now uses the actual content on your page.

At one point meta tags were considered a relatively important factor by <a href="http://badboysofim.com" rel="nofollow">Seach engine optimization</a>. AltaVista and other older search engines used them to help determine a site’s theme as well as relevance to a given term. This is no longer the case; search engines now rely on much more advanced techniques to do this. That said, meta tags still have some life left in them; they are sometimes used as the snippet of a site's content in search engine result pages by Google, and possibly other search engines. It's also possible they still have a little influence with some search engines in determining a site’s content.
