Effective Ways to Get Traffic to Affiliate Sites

Traffic is one of the most difficult things to get as an affiliate. How do you get it without wasting your money and how do you get traffic that actually converts into sales or leads? One thing is absolutely clear to any affiliate who gets started promoting products: it’s virtually impossible to make money without a substantial stream of consistent and targeted traffic. Some methods and channels are more effective than others. Let’s take a look at the most effective ways to get traffic to affiliate sites, without going crazy in the process.

Method #1 – Web 2.0 Marketing. What are these exactly? It’s a blanket category that includes everything from article directories like Ezinearticles.com to social and informative sites like Hubpages or Squidoo. These sites can be used to promote your site by building valuable and informative content and then linking back to your main site. If all goes well your web 2.0 properties will rank well in the search engines, get traffic and then you can help direct that traffic from your web 2.0 properties right to your “money” site. You can use these web properties to pre-sell the traffic and get them warmed up for a full on sales pitch, so in many ways this is superior to just sending paid traffic straight to a landing page or blog.

Method #2 – Pay Per Click Marketing. This comes in many different forms. You can purchase traffic through pay per click networks like Google Adwords or even purchase banner space on a site that gets traffic related to your audience or demographic. The idea here is to instantly get traffic, but you pay a premium for it. The only way to make this work is to earn more then you’re spending on traffic. The difference becomes your profit. In many ways you’re simply brokering traffic when you get into paid traffic sources but this is arguably one of fastest and most efficient ways to make big paydays online. Some of the most popular pay per click networks is Google Adwords, MSN Adcenter and Yahoo! Small Business Advertising.

Method #3 – Viral Reports. A great way to get more traffic and get attention that draws in even more traffic is to go viral. This is easier said than done, but once it’s done right it works for years to drive traffic. Depending on your niche write up a short PDF report you can give away on your blog or via mailing list and encourage people to give it away and distribute it. Throughout the report include links back to your site and maybe even an affiliate link. If you put effort into making a quality report that answers a lot of questions or solves a problem, you can expect the report to get distributed and draw in more traffic to your site.

Happy New YearGoogle said Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to Blog Traffic Exchange with the final toolbar pagerank update of 2008 according to Matt Cutts.

This was the first page rank update since launching the domain in late November with this blog. So in one month how much page rank can gain?

How does one pr5 and five pr4 pages sound? (There may be others, but I haven’t found them.)

Holy smokes! From brand new domain to Google Pagerank 5 in one month! It is too bad that pr has little real value other than bragging rights. However, based on this new information this domain company this now for sale for $2,000,000 $5,000,000.

Here are the pages

Google Pagerank 5

  1. Old Post Promoter — This is the plugin page for my first public foray into WordPress plugins.

Google Page rank 4

  1. Blog Traffic Exchange — Main page of this domain.
  2. WordPress Plugins — This is my page of WordPress plugins.
  3. Remove Dates From Permalink — Ever wanted to remove the dates from your WordPress permalink structure? Here is how to do it.
  4. 10 Benefits of Hosting your Own Blog — Title says it all.
  5. Using Blogger is a Mistake — Title says it all.

Update 5/28/10: I now have my first Page Rank 6 page: Click to Call — A wordpress plguin that integrates with your website to enable click2call.

How did I do it? Without going into the gory details, far and away the plugins are the main reason for the solid back links.

  1. Releasing and promoting 2 WordPress Plugins that are useful and are being used by people because they are useful. Old Post Promoter and Blog Copyright
  2. A few relevant blogroll link exchanges with my blogging friends.
  3. A little bit of social bookmarking.
  4. Some directory submissions.

Stay tuned the Blog Traffic Exchange is going to have a great 2009.

Hosting your own Blogs Carnival

carniThere are plenty of different ways that you can participate in a blogs carnival in order to increase the traffic to your blog. When you are just getting started, you may want to consider submitting your own posts to the blogs carnival publishers so that you can increase your readership. You also are going to want to consider looking at things from the other side of the spectrum, which means hosting your own blogs carnival so that you can increase your website and blog traffic even more dramatically.

Consider hosting a blogs carnival

This may sound a bit counter intuitive at first, and it may not make a lot of sense if you are wondering why anyone would want to link to other blogs, especially potentially competing blogs. What you are doing are showing the readers for your blog where they can go in order to get more and more valuable information on the subjects they are looking for. What you are doing in the process is becoming an authoritative resource for these people by showing them that you are truly plugged in to the topics and the trends of the specific subject that you are trying to sell.

As far as people just leaving your website to visit the other sites, this is not what your readers are going to do. If your blog has value, then people are going to stick around and read what you have to write. If your blog has no value, then people are not going to stick around no matter what, so do not worry about your blogs carnival stealing your traffic. There are always going to be a percentage of people that come to your blog and immediately click a link and move on. Why not direct these people to the right place where they should be going?

You may be feeling a little skeptical about why it would be a good idea for you to host a blogs carnival so here are some suggestions:

  • First of all, you are going to see other bloggers and authors visiting your blog since they want to participate in your blogs carnival. They are going to want to see the submissions that they made included on your blog. The authors are going to have a difficult time not coming to visit your blog and bringing their friends and colleagues along as well.
  • Second, people are also going to link to your issues of your blogs carnival. They are going to want to show their readers to your blogs carnival issues because you are collecting good, valuable information on a subject that relates to them. So if you are serious about building links and traffic, why are you not hosting your own blogs carnival?

Three Steps to Blog Carnivals

carnThe concept of blog carnivals has quickly become a powerful way for people to generate traffic for their blogs. By turning participation in blog carnivals into a regular habit and submitting all of your best posts, you are absolutely going to see more traffic coming to your blog. You are also going to be able to create valuable backlinks for each and every single post that you submit.

However, it is important for you to know that in order to really get the most benefit out of your participation in blog carnivals, you need to go through all three of the stages involved in the success with blog carnivals. Many people will only progress into the first stage before stopping, while others will make it to the second stage before they stop. If you really want to experience the true power behind what blog carnivals have to offer, you have to be able to make it all the way into the third and final stage.

So what are these three stages you ask?

Stage #1 – This stage is for people who are new to blog carnivals and are just trying the concept out for the first time. A lot of people read and hear about the concept of blog carnivals. The newbie is someone that realizes that the blog carnival concept is one worth trying. If you have made it to this point, then you are in good shape. If you have already participated in a blog carnival then you understand how beneficial they can be. Now you are going to want to progress into the next stage in the process, which is:

Stage #2 – This stage is for people who are beginning to submit to blog carnivals on a regular or semi-regular basis. This is when you are going to begin to truly understand all of the powerful benefits behind the concept of blog carnivals. By submitting to blog carnivals on a regular or semi-regular basis, you are going to begin to see increases in traffic coming from a variety of different sites. You will begin to see more and more of your posts being published in the blog carnivals. As the carnival owners begin to become more familiar with who you are, then they will begin to trust your content more and more as well.

Stage #3 – This is the stage for when you finally work up the guts to become a host for a blog carnival. This is one of the best ways that you can benefit from what blog carnivals have to offer. If you want more traffic, more back links and more attention, then you need to be prepared to host your own blog carnivals. There are a number of benefits associated with being a host that outweigh simply participating in someone else’s blog carnivals.
